John Cage’s experimental approach to art is, to me at least, very thought provoking to artists and non-artists alike. It encourages viewers and listeners to push the boundaries of things. We see this in his approach of 4:33. The idea of “there’s no such thing as silence” really provokes people to listen to their surroundings and the sounds within themselves. His piece pushed people to listen to their own soundtrack of life and listen to their own environment. I enjoyed the experimental aspect of his piece. It is cool to think of things out of their ordinary contexts. Pushing the boundaries, whether or not all people will like it, is a way to create art and it encourages an overall new perspective on life. Challenging the status quo and thinking outside of the box.

I think my favorite aspect though is the “there’s no such thing as silence” part of it all. I loved his pushing the idea of listening to all sounds because when you listen to the sounds surrounding you, a “song” is playing. In this way, it creates inspiration for those of us working on our next project, Exquisite Corpse. It allows us to think about finding beauty and music in the mundane, everyday experiences. In this way, we are less creating art but more so finding it around us and organizing it in a way that sends the message we hope to display.
